The Côte d'Azur, often referred to as the French Riviera, lies on the Mediterranean coastline of the SE corner of France, extending from Menton near the Italian border on the eastern edge to either Hyères or Cassis in the west. The Côte d'Azur was (and still is) one of the first resort areas in the world. It began as a health resort for ailing British tourists at the end of the 18th century. With the arrival of the railroad in the mid-19th century, it became the playground and vacation spot of British, Russian, and other aristocrats, such as Queen Victoria and King Edward VII, when he was Prince of Wales. Parisians frequently vacationed in this chic playground of the rich. In the first half of the 20th century it was frequented by artists and writers such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Edith Wharton and Somerset Maugham, as well as wealthy Americans and Europeans. Its largest city and administrative centre is Nice (population 350,000); it also contains the seaside resorts of Monaco, Cannes, Antibes, Juan-les-Pins, Saint-Raphaël, and Saint-Tropez, with a total population of over 2m. It is also home to an important research and technology center at the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis. All these towns are highly desirable French Riviera Property areas!
