Pretty, Alpine town:
The Alpine town of Taninges can be found in eastern France, close to Lake Geneva. It is refreshingly pretty, with its spectacular setting in the French Alps, its traditional architecture in the old parts of town and the many floral displays which are an attractive feature in the summer months.
Modern amenities:
Taninges is also a good sized town which offers modern amenities. It is a popular base with holiday makers, but is not by any means a tourist town in essence. The standard of living in Taninges is excellent, with residents being able to access most of their everyday needs without having to leave the town. There are hotels and many superb restaurants serving traditional Savoyard fare as well as a great choice of pizzerias and snack joints which keep the younger members of the family happy! In the summer months, Taninges is well known for its outdoor concerts… it’s not Glyndebourne, but it’s great fun!
Old town, brimming with history:
There are some very interesting places in Taninges, as unlike many towns in the surrounding areas, Taninges is a real, old town brimming with history. You can see the bridge, which dates from the XVI century, and the lovely chapel of Sainte Anne which was built in 1583. The town centre dates from the Middle Ages, when it became an important centre for artisans who made their wares from locally available resources such as wood, much as the artisans of the town are doing today. Taninges is also famous for its Carillon, introduced by a musically-minded bishop in 1939. This is played at fêtes and religious celebrations.
Mountain pursuits:
Most Alpine towns offer a fantastic choice of sports, and Taninges is no exception to this rule. In winter, due to the location of the town being close to many major ski resorts (Samoëns, Morillon etc), there is access to superb skiing, and there is also the resort of le Praz de Lys just above the town which has 24 lifts and 60 kilometres of cross-country runs. In summer there are a great variety of mountain sports to try, and within easy reach of the town you can swim, fish, walk, climb, cycle, horse-ride, play mini golf and even roller blade!
How to get there:
As Taninges is within one hours travel from Geneva, there is little difficulty involved in reaching the town. British Airways, easyJet, flybe, Jet2 and Aer Lingus fly to Geneva, while other nearby airports include Lyon (serviced by Air France, British Airways, easyJet, bmibaby, and bmi) and Chambery (serviced by flybe and Jet2). Rail travel is another choice available, as there is a TGV service into Grenoble from Paris, where you can link with Eurostar.
