French Motorways

France has a large network of motorways or autoroutes. However, the vast majority of the network has tolls. They are collected at toll booths where you can pay by cash or credit card. You will notice that there are special lanes, in the toll area, where you have pre-paid the tolls (Liber-t) - not for the general tourist! This lane moves quickly!

Most of the routes are dual carriage-way except near the major towns where there will be more lanes. There are many places to stop en-route not just petrol stations. There are parking areas where you can stroll, have a picnic or even inspect or taste products from the local area! The autoroute restaurants are much better than the UK equivalents. You will also find hotels in some service areas! For tourists who cannot live without their laptop, you will find WIFI areas too!
