French Departments

France is divided up into Regions and then sub-divided into Departements or Departments. For example, Languedoc-Roussillon is a region of France. The Languedoc-Roussillon is divided into 5 Departments - Pyrenees-Orientales, Aude, Herault, Lozere and Gard.

The départements (or departments) are administrative units of France and many former French colonies, and are roughly analogous to English counties. The départements  are further subdivided into 342 arrondissements.
