Visiting the Bordeaux Wine Region

Whether you’re just visiting in France or happen to own a second home in the country, you shouldn’t miss a visit to the famous Bordeaux wine region in the Aquitaine.  Known for over its fine wine since the 8th century (produced since the 1st century), the Bordeaux wine region is a must-see attraction for just about anyone interested in wine or the production of wine.

The Bordeaux region
The Bordeaux region is located along the Atlantic Ocean, in the southwest section of the country.  This area is ideal for growing grapes because of the weather and its soil content (limestone, which is heavy in calcium), and happens to be the second largest producing wine area in the world.  The wineries circle the port city of Bordeaux, which has over 200,000 residents.  That means a tour to one of the wine producing areas is never far from the city.  Some of the districts that are worth visiting are the Medoc in the north, St-Emilion in the east, and the Sauternes in the south.

The wine
Contrary to what its name infers, Bordeaux wine is more than just a fine red wine.  Even though the region happens to be known for its top quality red wine, it does produce some fine sweet and dry whites, along with some exquisite sparkling wines and even some brandies.  The famous red Bordeaux is produced from a blend of different grapes (i.e. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc).  As for location, Cabernet Sauvignon is grown in the Medoc, while Merlot and some Cabernet Franc can be found in Saint Emilion.

Getting around
Since the wineries are so close to the urban city of Bordeaux, it’s quite easy to take day trips to the different vineyards.  You can either drive from place to place in one day (with a good map in hand), or even take public transportation.  Trains run from Bordeaux to the Medoc and through neighboring areas where you’ll find some of the other wineries.  Buses are also an option, as many bus lines pass through some of the wine producing districts.  Don’t forget about the popular tour package option, which often comes complete with transportation, meals, and guided tours (in both French and English).

Find apartments, homes for rent, and even vacation rentals around the country that are available online, 24 hours a day.
