The cost of living in France

Many people decide to move to France because they believe it will keep their living costs down, and in some respects this is true.

But it is important to note that while living in France is in many ways cheaper than the UK, there are still items which are more expensive to buy across the Channel.

Cheaper goods in France

Statistics show that moving to France is generally less expensive than in the UK, which is often because mortgages are usually much smaller and therefore cost less to repay each month.

Other items with which newcomers will notice a clear drop in terms of spending are tobacco, alcohol and running and maintaining a car.

However, anyone who is planning to buy Limousin property for sale or renovate an old farmhouse must also remember that while they are saving costs on a day to day basis, a new home can be an expensive endeavour.

Watch out for hidden costs

Renovations, for example, are likely to be one of the biggest pay outs, with electricians, builders and plumbers all having to be paid.

Telephone bills may also increase as there is likely to be a rise in communications between you and your family and friends in the UK. Further, anyone who is living in a rural area may be forced to buy one or two cars which they will have to maintain as public transport may be scarce.

So although moving to France is likely to be a cheaper long term option, it is also important to budget properly when considering renovating a French property.
