TV licences in France

Just as they do in the UK, people who are living in France or thinking of moving to France will also need to think about getting a licence if they are planning to watch TV.

Whether you are looking at French farms for sale or considering taking out a buy to let mortgage on a villa, it is important that you prioritise getting a valid TV licence.

Licence important whether signal or not

In a similar way to that of the UK, a licence must be paid for in France if you have a TV regardless of whether you can receive a TV signal.

This means that anyone who is solely using their television for DVDs or videos will still need to pay, regardless of whether they ever bother switching on the French channels.

Those who do not own a TV, however, do not have to pay any fees.

Price for French TV licence

Prices do vary year to year but families who have recently bought French property should expect to pay around 116 euros for a licence, which entitles the viewer to access to services provided by Radio France, France Televisions and Radio France Internationale.

Unlike in the UK, public broadcasters are also able to get some funding through advertising although this practice has seen rapid decline in the last few years.

In order to reduce collection costs, residents will find that the licence fee in France is collected as part of local taxes or 'habitation taxes'.

This came into force in 2005, but those with an income which is fairly low or who are over 60 are sometimes exempt from paying all or some of the licensing costs.
