Staying in touch in France

Leaving the UK for a new life abroad can be a rewarding experience but many have concerns that they will struggle to stay in touch with family and friends back at home.

However, buying French property is unlikely to have a huge effect on your communication with loved ones, with dozens of ways now available to keep in touch.

Internet cafes, for example, are dotted across the country where you can send emails home, but for those who prefer a more traditional way of staying connected, the French also have an efficient postal system.

French post

The French Post Office or La Poste is, as in the UK, mainly used to covey letters but you can also open a bank account there.

Letters sent within France usually arrive the next day, which is useful for businesses and keeping in touch with acquaintances nearby.

Those sent to the UK will take a little longer but the post offices make it easier to speed things up by providing automatic stamp machines, photocopiers, weighing scales, label dispensers and internet stations as well as telephone booths.

Cost of posting a letter in France

As in the UK, the cost of posting a letter depends on its weight and where it is headed, with all those weighing up to 20g sent within France costing 0.54 euros.

Those posted to other countries in the EU weighing the same amount cost 0.60 euros to send and for countries which aren't member states the charge is 0.85 euros.

A five digit postcode must be written on any letters which are being sent within France as it identifies the exact region the post is being sent to. It is written before the name of the town or village on the last line of the address.
