Setting up the internet in France

For many who have purchased their dream French property and are starting to settle in, one of their top priorities will be getting on the web.

As well as being useful for keeping in touch with friends and family via VoIP and emailing, the internet is often vital for businesses and those with children as an educational tool.

For many families and retirees, the thought of having to set up an internet connection can be a daunting one in the UK let alone in France but the process does not have to be as much of a struggle as some people think.

Laptops in France

Both PCs and Macs should work with no difficulty across the Channel and French software can be easily downloaded onto a UK computer.

Even modems which were purchased in the UK should work within the French phone system, though for some there will be a 'country' setting in either the Windows control panel or the advanced modem properties.

Those who have moved to France will however need to change the electrical lead in their modem as sockets differ from in the UK or alternatively you can buy and adaptor.

French keyboard and broadband

Your keyboard will not necessarily need to change just because you are moving to France but if you are planning to set up a business where you are dealing with French clients it may be easier as the accents will appear automatically.

Broadband is becoming more and more widely available in France although in some rural areas or farms which are a long way from a city it many be less accessible.
