But if you are in need of a bit more convincing, it may be an idea to head to the pretty town of Pouilly sur Loire where each year the locals hold a wine fair to allow people from far and wide to sample the local booze.

The festival takes place throughout the town with plenty of wine to taste and the opportunity to take some away with you.

Held each year in August, the event is the perfect way to learn more about the Burgundy region while meeting new people and soaking up the atmosphere at the same time.

More than 20 different products are on offer to visitors including the better known Sancerre and Reuilly which come from beside the banks of the River Loire.

France's Burgundy vineyards make up around 60,000 acres of production with the largest producer, Maison Louis Latour in Beaune, managing 350,000 cases a year.
