Retiring to France
New research has revealed that thousands of Brits are choosing to retire to France
Over half of the UK population hope to head overseas once they get older, according to a survey by Insure4Retirement.co.uk.
The main reason behind heading across the channel to France was said to be long-standing fears about retired life in the UK.
Managing director of Insure4Retirement.co.uk David Holden said: "That over half of those polled are seriously considering retiring abroad is a telling indictment on the poor level of service provision and financial security offered to the retirement community."
Property market south of France And it is perhaps no surprise that the elder generation are thinking of buying property in France, if only for the fabulous weather.
The south of France is particularly popular with retirees because it guarantees hot sunshine for most of the year and has some beautiful beaches to relax on.
Although some areas can be very expensive, much of Languedoc Roussillon and the Midi Pyrenees have affordable property and watermills for sale.
Get your French driving licence Meanwhile, police in a small town in northern France have begun a campaign to try to get Brits to drive on the right side of the road.
It seems British natives in Flers who do not have a French driving licence struggle to get their heads around the change in position and are putting pedestrians and other motorists at risk.
Lieutenant Eric Turmet, a Flers police official, said there had been two fatal crashes in the last year because of people from the UK driving on the left side of the road.
Thousands of Britons have bought French property in the area because it's within easy driving distance to ferries that head across the English Channel to Britain.
