Provence's markets get everyone together

Provence may be well known for its relaxed atmosphere and stunning scenery but another attraction to the popular region is the local markets.

Market day is an important one in the week for both natives to the area and those who have bought French property. It is often seen to be as much of a social event as a grocery shop.

Many people who move to the area find strolling around the market not only great for getting to know the sorts of foods which are popular in the region but a chance to meet new people.

Markets in Provence will sell all different types of food most of which has been brought in by local farmers.

Some of the more popular fruit and veg on display include melons, peaches, apricots, courgettes and aubergines, all of which are a major part of the local cuisine.

Most people heading to the market will stay for a few hours chatting to vendors, soaking up the sun and generally enjoying the colourful atmosphere.

Markets pop up in almost every town with at least one every day of the week going on somewhere in the region. This often means that if you travel from one market to another you will see the same farmers and marketers in different towns.

As well as fruit and vegetables a huge selection of fish and meats are usually on display from local butchers as well as other French specialties such as bread, cheese, olives, spices and wine.

Whatever you are going for it is best to get down there early with most starting at 8am and finishing when the sun gets too hot to work outside at around 1pm.
