Midi Pyrenees welcomes French tourists

Visitors to the Midi Pyrenees will rarely struggle to find an exciting activity to do as it is the biggest region of metropolitan France and larger than the Netherlands or Denmark.

But those who want to try something that little bit different can have even more fun by attending the region's annual pig festival.

The event, held on the second Sunday in August, will see dozens of pig and pork lovers head to the town of Trie sur Baise for the big day.

The area is one of the biggest in France when it comes to pig farming and people come from miles around to sample the pork at what is the country's last traditional dedicated market.

And it is not just food on offer but entertainment as well, with dressing up competitions, piglet racing and sausage eating contests.

Perhaps the most popular part of the event, however, is the national pig imitation competition where experts compete to squeal like a pig.

This must be done skilfully in stages, with impressions of the pig's birth squeal, feeding squeal and even mating snort.

All these activities are followed by a huge party complete with French hot dogs, live bands and dancing.
