Leaseback 'popular with ski investors'

French leaseback property is particularly popular with Brits who are investing in ski resorts, one expert has claimed.

Ewan McGarrie, chief executive of Property Investment.co.uk, said that the scheme was becoming increasingly attractive to those who were buying on the slopes - particularly in France.

Guaranteed rental income

French leaseback provides the owner with a guaranteed rental income by leasing the property back to a management company who will let it at an agreed rent. In general, the initial lease is for nine to 11 years.

Mr McGarrie said of leaseback: "That's getting a very popular choice for people because the property is managed for you, you have a set rental income coming in which has been agreed in the contract and you're getting a reasonably good capital growth as well.

"Within that…depending on the leaseback company, you get a certain amount of personal usage from it as well. So that's been particularly popular with ski investors."

Consider investment before you buy

He added that it was important for anyone thinking of buying French property to consider whether it will be purely an investment or whether they want to also use is as a holiday home or potentially a place to retire to in the future.
