Know the law when retiring to France
Retiring to France can be one of the most satisfying moves of a person's life but to make sure it all goes smoothly, it is a good idea to double check some of the legal issues which may arise.
According to Heyday, a membership organisation for Brits approaching retirement, many older people head overseas without getting a firm grip on the potential pitfalls beforehand.
Laws differ in UK and France Alisa Ogilvie, director of Heyday, said that some people assume that the laws in the UK and France are the same and do not, therefore take into account the difficulties that they could get into when it comes to wills, pensions and inheritance.
"To try and avoid any pitfalls when purchasing a home people should obtain appropriate legal advice. Buyers should be aware that French inheritance laws will apply to property in France," she said.
"To avoid any confusion they should make a will in France as an English will may not apply," Ms Ogilvie added.
One in 12 living abroad Research from the Institute for Public Policy Research reveals that an estimated one in five British pensioners will retire overseas by 2050, with 2006 figures showing one in 12 already do.
