Just an hour from Calais, the area is ideal for short breaks offering stunning boutique shops, dozens of tourist attractions and plenty to keep you active.

Life's a beach in Picardy

If it's a beach trip you are after, the area's coastline is the least urbanised in all of France and is packed with beautiful sandy beaches and dunes.

The more adventurous can also enjoy windsurfing, land yachting, sailing, swimming or exploring the area's forests and castles and in most activity centres you can pick up a Picardy destination guide.

As with many of the French regions, the local people in Picardy are proud of their beautiful works of art and useful crafted objects.

Weaving, manufacturing and farming are all still very much alive in the area as well as basketry, wood, glass and metal crafts.

The skills of local people, such as fishing and shrimping, have often been passed down through the centuries with much of them being based around the sea, marshes and streams and rivers.
