Home insurance in France
Whether you are considering buying a chateau or looking at rural properties for sale in France, experts are warning that Britons should take out home buildings and contents insurance for any house purchased overseas.
According to the latest figures, around 800,000 UK residents decide to take the plunge each year and buy a property in France or beyond.
But according to property specialist HiFX, homeowners need to make sure they are aware that properties often need to be protected differently abroad than in the UK.
Overseas homes need different policy It says that there are "fundamental factors" that need to be taken into consideration when purchasing a home in France and avoiding these could be costly.
Mark Bodega, spokesperson for the firm, said: "Adequate overseas property insurance is essential to safeguard the viability of your investment.
"Storm damage and burst pipes rank amongst our most common claims. Overseas repairs can be expensive and in order to protect your investment, it is essential that any material damage is repaired by trustworthy skilled tradesmen."
Don't buy ordinary home insurance He also warned that families should not be tempted into buying ordinary home and contents insurance policies as in many cases the owners will be using it as a holiday home which may require different cover.
