Get away from it all in Poitou Charentes
Ideally situated away from the burning heat of the south but still mild enough not to have to wrap up, France's Poitou Charentes is an unspoilt region ready to welcome any British visitors.
There are a number of reasons why French villa rentals and trips to the area have become so popular, not least because it houses the birthplace of the world's best known brandy, Cognac.
Take a sip of Cognac The stunning medieval village of Cognac is always worth a visit for its cobbled streets and to experience where the famous alcoholic after dinner drink has reportedly been brewed since the 17th century
Not far away is the pretty seaside town of La Rochelle which is packed with tourist hot spots and hosts events throughout the year.
Its main feature is the Vieux Port or 'Old Harbour' which is lined with seafood restaurants and is a great place to catch an evening stroll.
It's great to stay in Ile de Re For anyone visiting the region, a trip to the sunny island of Ile de Re is a must. There is plenty on offer for those planning a day trip including water sports and historic buildings.
For those who fancy a longer stay, the area is packed with hotels where you can spend the night at a cheap rate.
Other areas in the Poitou Charentes region worth a visit are Poitiers, an ancient town on the Clain River and Green Venice, an area of marshland best explored by rowing boat or kayak.
