French property 'as popular as Spanish'

A property expert has revealed that investors are now turning to France, and not just Spain, when it comes to purchasing property abroad.

It seems that although Spain has always been a popular spot for investors, more and more Brits are also enjoying profits in France.

Maud Rousseau, spokesperson for estate agents Rightmove, said: "A lot of people used to talk about the 'Spanish dream', living on the Costa del Sol in the 80s and 90s. Now, the prices are as high as English prices so Brits start looking elsewhere and France is obviously another option."

Buying a chateau, farmhouse or land

According to Ms Rousseau, more Brits are tending to get French mortgages and it is more likely that they will buy a chateau or farm to live in permanently, rather than rent out.

There are many reasons behind this trend including the more relaxed lifestyle, cheaper goods and better transport systems.

It also seems that many are pulled to the country because of its fine cuisine and the access to some of the best wines in the world.

But where are all these Brits heading? According to Ms Rousseau, the ideal region is Burgundy, which she claims offers a "good price for amazing property".

"The Burgundy region or the Rhone are definitely places to invest because they've got four different seasons throughout the year," she said.

"So you've got a really hot summer, like at the moment now its 29 degrees in Burgundy, it's probably going to go up to 40 in the summer."
