French gites

For many, moving to France is not just to retire or for a few years in the sunshine but to start a whole new life somewhere else.

Many families dream of starting up a small business on arrival be it a gite, bed and breakfast or cafe, all of which can be very successful if the right steps are taken.

Making a living in France

Those who are considering taking on a gite are advised to think very carefully about practical issues such as the cost and time needed for planning permission or how much work is involved in say, converting your barn into gites.

It is also recommended that you pick your tradesmen carefully as those who turn up late or take longer on the work could mean you miss the tourist season and potential profits.

Another issue which many people tend to forget to consider is promoting your business, with advertising likely to take up a hefty chunk of any budget.

These costs will also continue throughout your time as a gite owner or hotelier and therefore must be taken into account as more than just a one off lump sum.

Costs and taxes for French businesses

Other considerations are the language and culture of the customers you are hoping to attract, with a relatively decent knowledge of the French language vital if you wish to succeed.

Alan Tyrrell, a copywriter and marketing specialist who has lived in France since 2005, told othercountries.com: "Costs involved in running a business in France can be complicated.

"Taxes, for example, depend on whether the profit from your business is considered commercial or non commercial."
