France's Hall of Mirrors glitters once more
France is steeped in history and visitors to the country are now able to enjoy the restoration of one of its oldest and most beautiful attractions.
For three years, holidaymakers who have visited the Chateau de Versailles have had good reason not to feel they have got their money's worth as the building's most famous room has been undergoing restoration work.
But finally, the stunning Hall of Mirrors has reopened to the public and is already causing a stir among historians, art lovers and tourists.
Visitors welcomed to Chateau de Versailles After an 18 million pound makeover, the hall has been transformed into almost exactly how it would have looked when it was first commissioned by Louis XIV in back in 1684.
Visitors are invited to witness the sparkling of 357 mirrors and 17 glass doors as well as stunning marble walls, chandeliers and ceiling paintings.
Located in Versailles in the Ile de France region, the renovations at the palace mark the first time the Hall of Mirrors has been cleaned from top to bottom in over three centuries.
Artisan hails restoration Speaking to the New York Times, Vincent Guerre, an artisan from southern France who helped with the restoration, said: "Some mirrors were replaced in the early 19th century, but 60 per cent of these mirrors were there under Louis XIV.
"This is a magical place, a testimony to an era."
