Brits flocking to retire in France

More and more Brits are deciding to retire abroad, with some choosing to buy Brittany property for sale and others heading further south where they can enjoy a life of leisure and sunshine.

An overseas property advisor has said that an increasing number of people are buying homes in other countries such as France because retiring abroad is a much easier option than it was in the past.

Retirees attracted by travel and healthcare

According to Paul Collins, spokesperson for BuyAssociation, widening travel and healthcare options overseas is making it easier for older people in particular to head across the English Channel.

He added that there was now a much bigger range of options for funding a retirement home, with people in their 40s buying houses abroad with a plan to retire there later in life.

Cheaper to live and buy abroad

Speaking about the advantages of retiring to France or other foreign countries Mr Collins said: "Not only can you buy a property cheaper, you'll also be able to live cheaper as well.

"Certainly, a lot of people when they retire downsize as well, they don't necessarily need a huge family home."

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that now around 40,000 UK residents move to France every year, many of whom live out their days in the country.
