A Country Drive Through Poitou-Charentes
The Poitou-Charentes region is generally considered one of the quieter
less developed regions of France, and for good reason, the region has
one of the lowest population densities in France.
With the exception of Poitiers and La Rochelle, no town has a
population greater then 50,000, making for a distinctly peaceful
lifestyle. In point of fact, Poitiers and La Rochelle are hardly large
cities, a small London Borough having a greater population.
A drive into the country isn't to be feared, it won't take more than a
few minutes until fields of sunflowers or the rich green of pasture
surrounds you. Rush hour usually means two or three cars following each
other for a mile or two.
Anyone who loves the relaxed feeling that comes with being the only car
on the road will love the country roads of Poitou-Charentes, forget
being stuck behind trucks, the motorways keep them well away from the
country roads, and of course, the villages and hamlets.
Many who drive through Poitou-Charentes comment on the quality of the
roads, ah well say the locals, that's because we look after them. And
they do, there are few potholes, and this civic pride extends to the
verges and median strips, neatly trimmed or filled with pretty seasonal
flowers.
The villages of Poitou-Charentes feature an over-abundance of
attractive homes with painted shutters, window planter boxes,
terracotta roof tiles, and solid sandstone walls. And each village has
its church with ringing bells.
Yes, a quiet country drive in Poitou-Charentes is well worth the time. Who knows, you might decide to stay.
